In a nutshell, Maslow established a hierarchy of needs (e.g., physiological, safety, belongingness) that individuals must fulfill to achieve an ultimate goal: self-actualization.<\/p><p>At the top of the companies\u2019 \u201cESG Pyramid\u201d are \u201ctotal business models\u201d, which seamlessly combine financial and societal benefit. Achieving this final stage means to answer \u201cyes\u201d to the question: \u201cWould the world be a worse place if my business no longer existed?\u201d<\/p><p>Emissions management is the foundation of the ESG Pyramid. Companies are overcoming data and methodological challenges to estimate their emissions footprint and to define reduction targets and action plans. This, together with the demanding carbon market dynamics, is accelerating the integration of emissions management in the companies\u2019 operational systems and priorities. This systematization is very good news indeed. It facilitates the deployment of resources to deal with climate change and fosters the engagement of internal and external stakeholders in the businesses\u2019 sustainability journey.<\/p><p>However, an exclusive short-term focus of companies on emissions management, thus not working in parallel in embedding sustainability into strategy, could have an important opportunity cost. Total business models\u2019 development requires collaborative experimentation and time to mature.<\/p><p>An effective way forward to address this challenge is to put in place a comprehensive set of strategic courses of action, such as the following:<\/p><ol><li>Verbalize and reinforce the positive societal impact of the current business.<\/li><li>Find inspiration in decarbonizing startups and social entrepreneurs.<\/li><li>Develop and test ventures aligned with the circular economy.<\/li><li>Explore entry into adjacent sectors under environmental transformation.<\/li><li>Enhance talent and wellbeing policies with people-centric practices.<\/li><\/ol><p>Total business models don\u2019t emerge from one day to the other. Like innovation, progress on sustainability needs to work in several business priorities and time horizons simultaneously. The challenge is to climb the ESG Pyramid as fast as possible, without compromising the robustness of its foundations.<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A menudo utilizo la analog\u00eda de la pir\u00e1mide de Maslow, en un contexto empresarial, para ilustrar la necesidad de unos cimientos s\u00f3lidos para lograr la transformaci\u00f3n. En pocas palabras, Maslow estableci\u00f3 una jerarqu\u00eda de necesidades (por ejemplo, fisiol\u00f3gicas, de seguridad, de pertenencia) que los individuos deben satisfacer para alcanzar un objetivo \u00faltimo: la autorrealizaci\u00f3n. En la c\u00faspide de la \u00abPir\u00e1mide ESG\u00bb de las empresas se encuentran los \u00abmodelos de negocio totales\u00bb, que combinan beneficio financiero y social. Alcanzar esta \u00faltima etapa significa responder \u00abs\u00ed\u00bb a la pregunta: \u00ab\u00bfSer\u00eda el mundo un lugar peor si mi empresa dejara de existir?\u00bb. La gesti\u00f3n de las emisiones es la base de la Pir\u00e1mide ESG. Las empresas est\u00e1n superando retos metodol\u00f3gicos y de datos para calcular sus emisiones y definir objetivos de reducci\u00f3n y planes de acci\u00f3n. Esto, unido al dinamismo del mercado de carbono, est\u00e1 acelerando la integraci\u00f3n del factor emisiones en los sistemas operativos y las prioridades de las empresas. Esta sistematizaci\u00f3n es una muy buena noticia; facilita la dedicaci\u00f3n de recursos para la acci\u00f3n clim\u00e1tica y potencia la implicaci\u00f3n de los agentes internos y externos en el camino hacia la sostenibilidad empresarial. Sin embargo, el hecho de que las empresas se centren exclusivamente en el corto plazo en la gesti\u00f3n de sus emisiones, sin trabajar paralelamente en la integraci\u00f3n de la sostenibilidad en la estrategia, podr\u00eda tener un importante coste de oportunidad. El desarrollo de modelos de negocio totales requiere experimentaci\u00f3n colaborativa y tiempo de maduraci\u00f3n. Una forma eficaz de abordar este reto es poner en marcha un programa de l\u00edneas de actuaci\u00f3n estrat\u00e9gicas, como las siguientes: Verbalizar y reforzar el impacto social positivo del negocio actual. Buscar inspiraci\u00f3n en las startups descarbonizadoras y en los emprendedores sociales. Desarrollar y probar iniciativas alineadas con la econom\u00eda circular. Explorar la entrada en sectores adyacentes en fase de transformaci\u00f3n. Potenciar las pol\u00edticas de talento y bienestar que ubican a las personas en el centro. Los modelos de negocio totales no surgen de un d\u00eda para otro. Al igual que en el caso de la innovaci\u00f3n, avanzar en sostenibilidad requiere trabajar simult\u00e1neamente en distintas prioridades horizontes temporales.
